Scottsdale Wildfire Awareness Week

The Scottsdale Fire Department encourages residents and businesses to take steps this week to protect their property and loved ones from dangerous wildfires. As temperatures rise and humidity levels drop, the beautiful green desert landscape we have enjoyed for many months will become dry and brittle, creating potential fuels for wildland fires. The brush fire season typically starts around mid-April, and continues until September.

Wildfires are not limited to remote desert areas; they also occur inside city limits, and in areas called “urban interface” zones. These are areas where homes are built into the natural desert environment. While these are beautiful areas, interface zones have a higher potential for fire risk. For this reason, residents are encouraged to do their part in helping reduce the risk of a brush fire around their home and property.

Governor Janet Napolitano has also shown her support of wildfire prevention and preparedness by declaring this week, April 21-28, 2008, Wildfire Awareness Week.
Read the Governor's Wildfire Awareness Week Proclamation

Residents and businesses are encouraged to do their part in helping reduce the risk of a brush fire by following these simple tips:

* Create a 30-foot fire safety zone around your home and other structures; this zone should be an area free of dried or dead grass and vegetation
* Trim your trees and remove any dead branches or leaves
* Keep your gutters, eaves and roof clear of leaves and other debris
* Keep a rolled-up garden hose with a nozzle attached to outside hose valve connections
* Properly dispose of cigarettes
* When camping, follow local agency rules for campfires; do not build a fire without making sure open fires are allowed, and always follow fire safety information
* Add a spark arrester to off-road vehicles and other small internal combustion engines, such as generators
* For current fire restrictions go to www.azstatefire.org or call (877) 864-6985
For information on invasive plants, home safety checklists and additional wildland prevention resources, visit www.scottsdaleaz.gov/fire/wildlandfire or call (480) 312-FIRE (3473).

Nikki Buchanan: Will Work For Food

The Arizona Republic newspaper is reporting that Phoenix Magazine fires dining critic, Nikki Buchanan.

This is what Nikki Buchanan's had to say about her firing in the Arizona Republic new story: "She said much of the friction that led to her dismissal can be traced to a negative review last winter of Luc's, a pricey, fine-dining Scottsdale restaurant. In response to the column, the unhappy parties - owners of the El Pedregal shops and the Boulders Resort - pulled their advertising."

This stuff has gone on for years! The local restaurants and hotels invite all the media including: tv stations, newspapers, and magazines to the restaurants for free food, free wine, and free beer!!! They want good reviews!!!

It appears that Nikki was reporting that she did not like a North Scottsdale restaurants food. This Scottsdale restaurant and the hotel complained to Phoenix Magazine and sounds looks like Nikki Buchanan was fired.

This is the second big news story out of the Boulders Resort in recent months.

Hey Nikki: I would love you to work for me and write Scottsdale restaurant reviews for my website. Starting pay is minimum wage plus tips!

Environmental Services Department Recommendations

Hand to mouth contact is a primary way of contaminating hands with infectious and toxigenic microorganisms which cause food borne illness.

Potentially hazardous food requiring refrigeration after preparation shall be rapidly cooled from 130 °F to 70 °F within 2 hours and from 70 °F to 41 °F within 4 hours.

Cooling to 45 °F is allowed if existing equipment is not capable of reaching the internal temperature of 41°F or below.

The hands and arms are particularly important as a potential vehicle of contamination between food, food-contact surfaces and the employee.

The Environmental Health Services Division of Maricopa County is responsible for ensuring that the restaurants in the County comply with the Environmental Health Code.

Howard Seftel - the Arizona Republic restaurant critic had this to say in his First Bite: Bourbon Steak restaurant review: "Just about everything about new Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess seems designed to upset restaurant purists."

Marriott Camelback Inn Hotel Trouble Gets Worse

Camelback Inn Construction Project Completion Date - September 2008

I decided today to get an update on the Scottsdale Marriott Camelback Inn hotel. The JW Marriott Camelback Inn property has been construction since April 30, 2007. The whole lobby, executive offices, and the meetings and events area have been torn down and reconstructed.

The Camelback Inn reservations center told me today at 1:00 p.m. Arizona time that the hotel construction is going to be finished on May 15, 2008. I questioned the female reservations agent on the timing. I told her the Camelback Inn website states the construction is finished in June 2008. She paused and then said that the construction is going to be finished in July 2008. She said a new update came out stating the Camelback Inn construction is going to be finished in July!

I now was really confused and called the Camelback Inn main phone line and asked if the hotels reservations are outsourced. The Scottsdale hotel phone operator told me that Marriott hotel reservations are handled in Omaha.

Now I make a third and final call to the Camelback Inn and again ask the operator when the hotel construction will be finished. The operator told me that the Camelback Inn construction will be finished in September 2008.

** Exclusive ** - This is huge Scottsdale news! The whole summer hotel season is a wash. The Camelback Inn Hotel Resort website is not even telling future guests that the construction is going on till September!!

Now - to confirm everything I called the concierge desk and the clerk confirm that the construction of the restaurants, and the whole Camelback Inn Resort Hotel will be finished in September 2008!

The hotel concierge stated that the hotel is having construction problems!!!!

Bill Marriott Bloomberg TV on the Economy; 1/17/08

Marriott is pushing reservations for this hotel stating to customers that the construction is going to be finished on May 15, 2008. What a joke!!! At $300 - $500 a night to stay at this Scottsdale hotel and they are putting out wrong information.

Camelback Inn tore down the Chaparral Supper Club for a new BLT Steak restaurant. The New York-based, BLT Steak, the highly rated steakhouse-French bistro created by Laurent Tourondel opens at the end of the year.

Camelback Inn Hotel Awards:
• AAA Diamonds: 5
• Mobil Travel Guide Stars: 3

Just three lodgings have maintained the distinction as AAA Five Diamond Award winners for 32 consecutive years, since the Diamond ratings were first applied to hotels: Camelback Inn, A JW Marriott Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona; The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Scottsdale Healthcare Hospital Wait Times Posted Online

ER Wait Times Posted on Scottsdale Hospital Website

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (April 11, 2008) – Scottsdale Healthcare is the first in Arizona, and one of the first in the nation, to post real-time wait times for its Scottsdale hospital Emergency Rooms on its web site.

Times posted on www.shc.org represent the time it takes to get a patient from the ER’s front desk to an exam room.

Wait times are updated every 10 minutes for Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, Scottsdale Healthcare Shea and Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak.

“Wait times can vary but we wanted to give Scottsdale an honest look at what actual times they can expect at our hospitals,” said Nancy Hicks-Arsenault, director of emergency services. “Some hospitals may advertise a ‘door-to-doc’ time guarantee but that can be a very difficult guarantee to live up to.”

A national study by Press Ganey Associates in 2007 showed Scottsdale Healthcare beat the state and national average wait times for hospital emergency rooms. The study measured the average amount of time patients spend in the ER from time of arrival to time of discharge from the hospital.

Scottsdale Healthcare ER patients average about three hours “from door-to-discharge.”
Arizona ranked 48th of 50 states in the study, with an average ER wait of 5 hours and 37 minutes. The national average ER wait time is 4 hours.

“Of course, there is always room for improvement, and we work hard to refine our processes to further reduce the time it takes to register a patient, be seen by the physician and be discharged or admitted into the hospital,” said Hicks-Arsenault.

More than 100,000 patients are seen annually in the ERs at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak is the Valley’s first hospital north of Loop 101. It opened five months ago and already is averaging more than 1100 emergency patients a month.

Scottsdale Healthcare (www. shc.org) is the not-for-profit parent organization of the Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, Scottsdale Healthcare Shea and Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak hospitals, Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute, Scottsdale Healthcare Home Health Services and Scottsdale Healthcare Community Health Services.

Bill Marriott Dines at Hell's Kitchen

Marriott International CEO Bill Marriott celebrated his 76th birthday at his favorite hotel, the Camelback Inn.

"Marriott said he hasn't missed a birthday at the AAA five-diamond-rated Paradise Valley property in 40 years. " wrote Donna Hogan of the Tribune Phoenix newspaper.

Mr. Marriott last wrote about the Camelback Inn in a blog posting on April 3, 2007.

Mr. Marriott was well aware of his favorite Marriott hotel restaurant status! He saw my blog about the Camelback Inn Five Diamond Resort failing restaurant inspections.

I received a response letter on behalf of Bill Marriott. The hotel response did not mention the status of the resort's main dining room, and the health spa restaurant inspection problems. Here is a copy of the letter from Marriott management:

Fri, Mar 21, 2008 11:35 am

Dear Mr. Kosednar,

I have been asked to contact you on behalf of Mr. Marriott in regards to your blog that was posted in response to our December health inspection report at our Golf club.

Upon receipt of the inspection, we requested and were granted an instructional audit and re-inspection in order to clarify and address the concerns that were noted in the report. On January 28th, I personally toured the facility with the Inspector as well as our Restaurant Director. During this inspection, all concerns had been addressed and we gained a favorable rating.

As one of the leading food service providers in the city, we work very closely with the local Health Department in order to ensure compliance with all regulations and to maintain the high standards we place upon ourselves. We will continue to work with all of local authorities in the future to that end.

We appreciate your inquiry and would welcome the opportunity to address any specific questions or concerns that you may have.

Sincerely,

Ralph Scatena
General Manager

This free event takes place every Thursday in downtown Scottsdale when local art galleries open up their doors from 7-9 p.m. to offer special artist demonstrations, exhibit openings, live music and refreshments. For the musically inclined, every Sunday night from May to June, McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park offers Summer Concerts in the Park, a free series where bands play and everyone is invited to lounge in the grass and soak up the tunes.

SONORAN DESERT SPLENDOR
Early risers looking for a great hike with an amazing view should look no further than the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, which contains 36,000 acres of Sonoran Desert as public open space. The preserve is open from dawn to dusk and visitors are welcome to hike, bike, rock climb or ride horses throughout the vast area. A great way to experience the majestic Sonoran desert at no cost! Climb higher into the sky and take a hot air balloon ride. Hot Air Expeditions will take you up above the desert with picturesque opportunities that provide a 360-degree view or take a hummer tour with Roadrunner Desert Hummer Adventures where your tour guide will take you to an Indian fort, show how to navigate a tunnel, and even prospect for stones at a turquoise mine.

Avid golfers can double their playing pleasure with both courses at TPC Scottsdale. The 36 Hole Summer Special includes a morning round at the Champions Course (which recently underwent a renovation that lengthened the course to approximately 7,115 and a par of 71), lunch at the Champions Grill, and an afternoon round on the Stadium course. This special is available June 9-30 and Aug. 1-31 for $99 per person. Summer golfers also can check out The Westin Kierland Resort, which features air-conditioned golf carts that cool the air in and around the cart by more than 40 degrees along with an air-conditioned driving range, which means no matter how hot it gets, a golf game can go on! And if you’re looking to relax after a hard day of golf, try Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North’s golfers massage where warm golf balls are used to alleviate tension and stiffness and help keep golfers at the peak of their game.

When the night falls and stars shine, visitors can grab their flashlights and experience Desert Botanical Garden’s Night Flashlight Tours, which showcase the magical twilight in the Garden. Nighthawks, night-blooming flowers, toads, owls, snakes, spiders and scorpions are some of the exciting sights you can see. Tours are $10 and offered Thursday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. from May 1 – Aug. 30. Or try Stellar Adventure’s Hummer Stargazing Tour and you’ll get to spend an hour with a professional astronomer in the desert who will teach you how to stargaze using state-of-the-art telescopes. Finally, jazz up the evening by hitting up The Scottsdale Plaza Resort for “Cool Summer Nights” jazz performances by some of the Valley’s finest musicians.

The 200-foot granite peak and two other rock climbing areas, Cactus Flower and Y-Crack Boulder, are available for rock climbing whenever the park is open. There are also excellent quality routes on smaller crags near the peak. Together these offer a wide selection traditional crack and bolted routes. Climbing areas can be accessed from marked climbing trails. One note: the Lower East Wall is closed to climbing.
