Mountain Rescue - Tom's Thumb - McDowell Sonoran Preserve

Mountain rescue reported in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve on the Tom's Thumb trail.

Units responding and on scene include: Scottsdale Fire, Phoenix Police "Firebird" helicopter and Air Evac 12.

Details: Scottsdale FD tells us in an email that an adult male patient fell and received multiple fractures and loss of consciousness. Scottsdale fire paramedics provided advanced care to the patient. PPD Firebird helicopter brought the patient off the mtn to the landing zone. Air Evac 12 transported patient to the hospital.

The Scottsdale Fire Department is reminding hikers to:

  • Always hike with a buddy
  • Bring plenty of water
  • Wear proper attire including correct foot wear
  • Check weather prior to heading out for the day
  • Always stay on marked well-traveled trails
  • Loose rocks and other debris may be present on the trail (injured ankles and severe falls)
  • Always carry your cell phone with a fully charged battery
  • Take breaks as needed
