Two Confirmed Fissures

The Arizona Geological Survey websites says: "earth fissures: a geologic hazard that threatens people, property, infrastructure (e.g., roads, gas lines, canals), and livestock. The Arizona Earth Fissure Center website has some very important information including maps of the two confirmed fissures.

It was pretty easy to located the area of the two confirmed earth fissures. I downloaded a map from the Arizona Earth Fissure website and zoomed in and then went to Google maps and looked for a city street that is nearby. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd was located near the sink holes and Taliesen West and the CAP Canal were also nearby.

I had to do some bush wacking to these sink holes! Looks like a major study area with stakes and markers all around. I have made a few trips out to this location. I think the holes in the ground are getting bigger.

The Ancala Country Club is just north of the fissures. Hundreds of homes in Ancala are located to the north and to the east of the fissures. To the south is the CAP Canal and on the other side is hundreds of Scottsdale homes along Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd.

It was a really important learning experience visiting this area. Take a look around your property. Walk in the open space in your neighborhood. Look for opening in the ground and or sink holes. Report fissures to the AZGS Fissure Hotline Phone: 520-770-3500.
