Investigation Under Way in Grand Canyon Train Derailment

Train traffic has fully resumed on the route between Grand Canyon and Williams where a Grand Canyon Railway train was derailed, officials said.

Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Shannan Marcak says the train’s 70 passengers, four engine crew and three service attendants were unhurt.

The accident happened around 11:40 a.m. Monday morning on an icy railroad track near Rowe Well Road three miles inside the park boundary, according to Marcak.

Marcak said a replacement locomotive was brought in to complete the train’s scheduled round trip.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was caused by a buildup of ice on the tracks, she said.

The distance from Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon is 65 miles and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes each way, according to the Grand Canyon Railway web site.

The National Park Service and the Federal Railroad Administration are investigating the incident.
