- Supervise children with eye-to-eye contact wherever they are around water.
- Never swim alone, no matter what age you are.
- Designate an adult to be responsible for watching kids in pools and during parties, rotating shifts. Don’t assume that because there are several people around the water that someone is going to notice in time when someone is in trouble in the water.
- Ensure pool gates are well-maintained and used correctly. A propped gate is not going to keep anyone from the water.
- Learn to swim – that means both children and the caregivers who are watching them.
- Know CPR. Traditional mouth-to-mouth cardiopulmonary resuscitation is required in water-related incidents to replenish the oxygen supply the brain needs.
