Homicide Investigation - 8100 E Vía Sonrisa, Scottsdale, AZ 85258

Homicide investigation reported in the 8100 block of East Vía Sonrisa in Scottsdale, Arizona.

[Update: 1:25 AM] Yesterday at 6:50 p.m., Scottsdale patrol officers responded to a “sound of shots” call at a residence in the area of 8100 E. Via Sonrisa. When officers arrived at the residence, witness information and evidence at the scene indicated that a possible suspect might be present. Barricade procedures were initiated. The SPD SWAT team responded to the call and they later located an adult female deceased inside of the home. We are in the early stages of this investigation. Updates will be provided as they become available, according to Sgt. Ben Hoster, Public Information Office with the Scottsdale Police Department.

[Update: 8:45 AM MST] The investigation has revealed that a male roommate returned to his residence yesterday afternoon when he heard multiple gunshots coming from the female victim’s bedroom. Moments later the victim’s ex-boyfriend, 37-year-old Charles Haeger, exited the victim’s bedroom with a handgun. Haeger then pointed the handgun at the roommate. The roommate quickly escaped out of the back of the residence, and he was able to get a neighbor to call 9-1-1.

Haeger is still outstanding at this time and we are asking for help from the public in finding him. Haeger is described as a white male, 37 yoa, 6’1, medium build, and short brown hair. He was last seen wearing a dark colored shirt. Haeger is driving a 2020 Gray Plymouth Voyager (Arizona License Plate - BTA9645). He should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Charles Haeger is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately, according to Sgt. Ben Hoster, Public Information Office with the Scottsdale Police Department.

[Update: 12:53 PM MST] The suspect vehicle was found unoccupied near Flagstaff. Haeger is still outstanding. We are coordinating with law enforcement in northern Arizona as we continue to search for the suspect, according to Sgt. Ben Hoster, Public Information Office with the Scottsdale Police Department.

[Update: 5:18 PM MST] The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Danielle Breed. We will provide further updates as they become available, according to Sgt. Ben Hoster, Public Information Office with the Scottsdale Police Department.

[Update: 8:02 PM MST] Today at approximately 4 p.m., Haeger was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound along the rim trail at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The investigation is on-going at this time, according to Sgt. Ben Hoster, Public Information Office with the Scottsdale Police Department.

Charles Wallis Haeger was a former American professional Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher. Born: 9/19/1983 in Livonia, MI. He played for the Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers, according to information posted on mlb.com.
