Paria Canyon - April 21, 2005

Started at 8am from Lees Ferry with nice overcast skies! Hiked up the river which was flowing at around 38 cfs. which is a pretty good flow - was even a little scared looking at the flow under the bridge the night before!!!

I had a weeks worth of food with me with a large storm heading in on Saturday - I just wanted to have supply if the storm came in before I was out of the canyon and got stuck.

Stayed first night at Bushhead Canyon and second night about 11 miles from White House Trailhead.

The water was ankle to waist deep in areas and I would ad ICE cold. I took four falls in the the water crossing and it was mainly because of the muddy waters and the flow rate.

I was rushing to get out mid day Saturday before a large storm was supposed to enter the canyon area with 30% chance of rain - which was upgraded to 60% when I exited the canyon and the weather service was giving flash flood warning to all Utah canyons for heavy rain and flooding in canyons!

I exited at 1pm and called Betty to be picked up and she was there at the Whitehouse Trailhead in 45 minutes!!

Nice trip - today the canyon is flooding at 67 cfs at 2pm - my permit was thru today Sunday but I knew the weather was going to be bad and got out before danger. I saw a group of 10 young people and one couple heading in Saturday - hopefully they will be ok and out of dangers way.
